JOURNEY TO ORTHODOXY

I grew up unchurched. I became a Christian in high school through reading the Living Bible. I was active in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship at the University of Hawaii. My home church was Kalihi Union Church (KUC), a fine evangelical congregation that was part of the United Church of Christ (UCC).

I was deeply troubled by the UCC’s liberal theology and wanted to help it return to its biblical roots. This led me to study at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary for the Continue reading Robert Arakaki, Hawaii, USA: From Unchurched Hawaiian to Local Orthodox

A young monk said to the great ascetic Abba Sisoes: “Abba, what should I do? I fell.” The elder answered: “Get up!” The monk said: “I got up and I fell again!” The elder replied: “Get up again!” But the young monk asked: “For how long should I get up when I fall?” “Until your death,” answered Abba Sisoes. —Sayings of the Desert Fathers

“When I went to my first confession,” a friend told me, “tears took the place of the sins I meant to utter. JOURNEY TO ORTHODOXY

Fr. Phil Thompson is the author of the Silouan blog, an excellent site for information. He is also a well known iconographer in North American Orthodoxy, and this, his story, was taken from his own website http://silouanthompson.net

“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon every soul, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common… Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:42-47)

When I became a Christian in 1980, I was living with a Roman Catholic family and Continue reading Fr. Philip Silouan Thompson, USA: Moving East – From Roman Catholicism & Protestantism to Orthodoxy

Holy Confession: Confidentiality

http://americaofmyheart.wordpress.com

AMERICA OF MY HEART

Holy Confession: Confidentiality

From “Guidelines for Clergy” (Orthodox Church in America):

“The secrecy of the Mystery of Penance is considered an unquestionable rule in the entire Orthodox Church. Theologically, the need to maintain the secrecy of confession comes from the fact that the priest is only a witness before God. One could not expect a sincere and complete confession if the penitent has doubts regarding the practice of confidentiality. Betrayal of the secrecy of confession will lead to canonical punishment of the priest.

St. Nicodemus the Hagiorite exhorts the Spiritual Father to keep confessions confidential, even under strong constraining influence. The author of the Pedalion (the Rudder), states that a priest who betrays the secrecy of confession is to be deposed. The Metropolitan of Kos, Emanuel, mentions in his handbook (Exomologeteke) for confessors that the secrecy of confession is a principle without exception.”

In St. Nicodemus the Hagiorite’s Exomologitarion, he writes:

“Nothing else remains after confession, Spiritual Father, except to keep the sins you hear a secret, and to never reveal them, either by word, or by letter, or by a bodily gesture, or by any other sign, even if you are in danger of death, for that which the wise Sirach says applies to you: “Have you heard a word? Let it die with you” (Sir. 19:8); meaning, if you heard a secret word, let the word also die along with you, and do not tell it to either a friend of yours or an enemy of yours, for as long as you live. And further still, that which the Prophet Micah says: “Trust not in friends… beware of thy wife, so as not to commit anything to her” (Mic. 7:5).

For if you reveal them, firstly, you will be suspended or daresay deposed completely by the Ecclesiastical Canons, and according to political laws you will be thrown in jail for the rest of your life and have your tongue cut out. Secondly, you become a reason for more Christians not to confess, being afraid that you will reveal their sins, just as it happened during the time of Nektarios of Constantinople when the Christians did not want to confess on account of a Spiritual Father who revealed the sin of a woman. The divine Chrysostom both witnessed these things and suffered because of them on account of his trying to convince the people to confess. It is impossible for me to describe in words how much punishment this brings upon you, who are the cause of these things.”

St. John of the Ladder writes:

“At no time do we find God revealing the sins which have been confessed to Him, lest by making these public knowledge, He should impede those who would confess and so make them incurably sick.”

The Byzantine Nomocanon states, in Canon 120:

“”A spiritual father, if he reveals to anyone a sin of one who had confessed receives a penance: he shall be suspended [from serving] for three years, being able to receive Communion only once a month, and must do 100 prostrations every day.”

JIM & NANCY FOREST

I am sometimes asked how the son of atheist parents ended up not only a Christian but a member of the Orthodox Church.

In fact it wasn’t so big a leap as it sounds. For starters my parents weren’t people for whom atheism was a religion unto itself. Their atheism seemed to mainly to do with being on the Left. Their real interest was in the down-and-out — people who were being treated like beasts, underpaid or jobless, trapped in slums, without health care, etc. When I was Continue reading JIM & NANCY FOREST: BECOMING ORTHODOX – FROM USA TO NETHERLANDS, FROM PROTESTANTISM TO ORTHODOXY

Pilgrimage to St Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina, California, USA

In September of 2009 my family, along with a very close friend of ours made a pilgrimage to Saint Herman of Alaska Monastery in Platina, California. This was not our first trip up the mountain, but it was different then the past trips as Father John (Hieromonk) invited us to visit the Old Russian cathedral where Saint John Maximovitch first called home in San Francisco, Ca. We couldn’t find a place to stay the night that was within our budget so Father John put us up in the choir loft of the old cathedral. We were blessed more than we could really put into words on this trip. Glory to God for all things +++

Polamalu was born in Garden Grove, California. He is of Samoan descent.

Troy Aumua Polamalu (born Troy Aumua on April 19, 1981), is a former American football strong safety who played his entire twelve-year career for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the University of Southern California (USC), and earned consensus All-American honors. He was chosen by the Steelers in the first round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He was a member of two of the Steelers’ Super Bowl championship teams, and was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2010.

Polamalu is married to Theodora Holmes and has two sons: Paisios, born on October 31, 2008, and Ephraim, born September 16, 2010. Theodora is the sister of NFL player and USC Trojans alumnus Alex Holmes.  He resides with his family in Pittsburgh during the football season and San Diego, California during the off-season.

Polamalu is well read in the history and theology of early Christianity, which ultimately led both him and his wife to convert to Orthodox Christianity in 2007. He makes the Sign of the Cross after every play. Among his spiritual activities was a 2007 pilgrimage to Orthodox Christian sites in Greece and Asia Minor. He seldom gives interviews, but when he does, he often speaks of the role his spirituality plays in his life. Polamalu has said that he tries to separate himself from his profession as much as possible, including not watching football games at home. He prays after each play and on the sidelines. His sons are both named after after Saint Paisios of Mt. Athos, Greece (+1994) and his Spiritual Father, Fr. Ephraim of Arizona.

JOURNEY TO ORTHODOXY

On this sunny So-Cal day, Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu graciously postpones his morning workout to ruminate about not just football – but life and what’s most important in it. I narrow our chat to three topics.

By Gina Mazza

Pittsburgh Magazine, August 2009

Football is a given: How was this year’s Super Bowl experience versus XL? Tomlin versus Cowher? Goals for the coming season?
Fatherhood is new in Polamalu’s life since the birth of his son, Paisios, named after a beloved contemporary Greek Orthodox monastic, Elder Paisios, on Oct. 31, 2008. Has daddy-dom been life-changing? Will he encourage his son to play professional sports? How’s that
beautiful new mom doing?

And last but not least: Faith. In order to properly meet Polamalu where he lives, this is the requisite, the grounding force that gives meaning to everything he does, every play he makes. Polamalu’s evident gratitude to the one who made him Continue reading THE MANE MAN – AN INTERVIEW WITH TROY POLAMALU OF PITTSBURGH STEELERS TEAM, SAMOA & USA – JOURNEY TO ORTHODOXY

The Shocking Truth about Christian Orthodoxy

John Behr, USA

Fr. John Behr takes on those who dismiss Jesus Christ on “historical grounds,” by explaining how historicism itself is problematic and, indeed, heretical. The alternative to historicism as our mode of interpretation, he explains, is Christ on the cross as the foundation of all our knowledge and interpretation.

The Very Rev. Dr. John Behr is the Dean of St. Vladimir’s Seminary in Crestwood, N.Y., where he is also Professor of Patristics, teaching courses in patristics, dogmatics, and Scriptural exegesis. He also teaches at Fordham University, where he is the Distinguished Lecturer in Patristics.

This lecture was delivered as part of the annual Augustine College Weston Lecture series on March 23rd, 2012.

Here is the original question:

SIMPLY ORTHODOX

Hello,

The best is first to be willing to spend the time to really understand the commonalities and differences between Roman Catholicism or Protestantism and Orthodoxy (Eastern Orthodox Church).

In most cases, a person begins the process of conversion by speaking with a local Orthodox priest, who gives instructions (or catechism) on the teachings and beliefs of the Orthodox Church. These beliefs and doctrines have continued unchanged for over 2000 years, since the time of Jesus and the Twelve Apostles. This process of catechism could take many months. Once you have learned about the faith and teachings of the church, you would then be ready to be baptized as a member of the Orthodox Church, in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (ie. the Holy Trinity). Baptism is by triple immersion in water. At the same time, you would be Chrismated, which means receiving the Holy Oil and the Holy Spirit.

Thanks for your message! If you need anything, I am here 🙂

I thank God that the truth of the Orthodox Church is being revealed to all over the world!!!

ORTHODOXY IS LOVE

A man was seen by employees of a Virginia Beach restaurant digging through a trash can looking for something to eat and the business took action.

Eleni Fotidou is the owner of Zorba’s, a Greek restaurant on Princess Anne Road in Virginia Beach.

“I never want to see anyone like that,” says Fotidou.

Last Friday, she and others were disturbed.

“We didn’t quite realize what he was doing at first, but to take a better look at it at him, you realize he’s searching for food,” says Samantha McCauley.

The owners say they were heartbroken when they looked outside and saw the man looking for food in the trash.

“No one is allowed in 2015 to go to bed starving,” says Fotidou.

The owners showed us their security video from last Friday. They said minutes after the man was searching through the trash, you can see him walking away.

A woman who works nearby ran after him to give him water. They offered him food but he declined and seemed upset.

So they took action and hung up signs near the trashcans encouraging anyone in need of food to come inside.

They said hanging the signs are easier than having an awkward conversation with someone in need who might be too embarrassed.

A restaurant in Oklahoma went viral after posting a similar sign about six weeks ago.

The owners at Zorba’s said helping others is what they are accustomed to doing.

“In Greece, it’s the home of hospitality. We learn to do that, in Greece we are all big families. We always help each other, love each other,” says Fotidou.

They said they have only seen a handful of people going through the trash and the area doesn’t see too many homeless people. But these owners said the thought of just one person without any food is too much, and they’re happy to take action and fill the stomach of someone in need.

The Kelly Family – Take my hand

So take my hand, you are my brother.

So take my hand, you are my sister.

So take my hand, we need each other,

don’t try to walk the road alone!

Through the dark, we’ll walk together.

through the rain, forget the weather.

through the storm, we’ll sing a song,

why try to walk the road alone?

ORTHODOX CHRISTIAN MISSION CENTER

Thank you so much for your prayers! We’ve arrived safely in Ulaan Baatar, Mongolia. We are doing well and adjusting to the 12-hour time change. Our 2-room apartment is lovely and came furnished. The past couple of days we’ve been purchasing kitchen items and a few appliances. It’s been good to get out into the city for these excursions and for some general exploring. The mornings and evenings can be chilly (around freezing), but the sun comes out in the day and warms up to the 50’s, which is really nice. The apartment stays very warm. We have so much to be grateful for!

Yesterday we had our first opportunity to celebrate the Divine Liturgy service at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church. It was great to worship our God with our brothers and sisters and a pleasure to make some new acquaintances in the church after the service. Our son Andrew tends to draw a lot of attention from Russians and Mongolians alike!

We were also able to touch base with the Mongolian International University and High School administration and teachers on Friday. It was good to put some faces with names that we’d been in contact with through e-mail. There will even be opportunities for us to study Mongolian at the Language Institute attached to MIU before our work begins there in February.

Please pray for opportunities to get better acquainted with church members and co-workers and to meet neighbors!

Greetings!

As of October 2014 we are now in Mongolia full time, serving our first two-year term. We are currently taking Mongolian classes and will begin teaching English in the spring semester. We are worshiping at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Ulaanbaatar and are just beginning to become acquainted with the city. We appreciate your continued prayers as we strive to learn the language, live the culture, and love those we meet.

Keith Massey, Wisconsin, USA:

An American Protestant was converted to Orthodoxy

http://americaofmyheart.wordpress.com

AMERICA OF MY HEART

My name is Keith Andrew (Andrei) Massey. I am an American and a convert to the Orthodox Church, who then married a Romanian. I was once a Protestant. In my case, a study and a deeper knowledge of the Bible, in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek I was led to believe that the Protestant Church was not true. In the video above top one to tell you this story. My wife and I spend all summer every year in Romania. I saw at first, as American Protestants and dissenters come in Romania in order to remove the Orthodox of the true faith. These missionaries cite the Bible say things that prove that Church Orthodox is wrong. And operate under the assumption that the Orthodox do not know the Bible at all, and therefore what they say about the Bible will not be challenged. I do not think I want to say that Protestants are bad people. My brother twin is Lutheran pastor and I love him very much. In fact, we had Orthodox Protestants can admire the conviction they have in their faith. But an Orthodox Christian should know the Bible verses that show that, indeed, the Church has faithfully preserved the same beliefs and practices reflected oldest church that produced the Bible. In these pages you can find collections of Bible verses that appear in Church Orthodox. In fact, we, Orthodox Christians should not use the Bible to “prove” Orthodoxy, as do Protestants and sectarians. Church produced the Bible. Church decided which books should be in the Bible andwhich are not. So the Bible is not an authority over the Church. Therefore, do not quote the Bible to “prove” the Orthodox faith. True faith has been preserved, the apostles received from Jesus and then faithfully received and stored in the Orthodox Church to this day. I do not claim to speak for the Church officially. I present these pages Romanian Orthodox Church authorities for approval and correction.

Glorification of the Venerable Herman of Alaska,

Wonderworker of All America

OCA – ORTHODOX CHURCH IN AMERICA

Venerable Herman of Alaska, Wonderworker of All America. A spiritual mission was organized in 1793, made up of monks of the Valaam Monastery. They were sent to preach the Word of God to the native inhabitants of northwestern America, who only ten years before had come under the sovereignty of Russia. St Herman was among the members of this Mission.

St Herman came from a family of merchants of Serpukhov, a city of the Moscow Diocese. His name before he was tonsured, and his family name are not known. (The monastic name is given when a monk takes his vows). He had a great zeal for piety from youth, and at sixteen he entered monastic life. (This was in 1772, if we assume that Herman was born in 1756, although sometimes 1760 is given as the date of his birth.) First he entered the Trinity-Sergius Hermitage which was located near the Gulf of Finland on the Peterhof Road, about 15 versts (about 10 miles) from St Petersburg.

MIRACULOUS HEALING OF HERMAN

At the St Sergius Hermitage there occurred the following incident to Father Herman. On the right side of his throat under his chin there appeared an abscess. The swelling grew rapidly, disfiguring his face. It became difficult for him to swallow, and the odor was unbearable. In this critical condition Father Herman awaited death. He did not appeal to a Continue reading ST HERMAN OF ALASKA, USA – GLORIFICATION OF THE VENERABLE HERMAN OF ALASKA, WONDERWONDER OF ALL AMERICA

Come, O assembly of the Orthodox,

and with love let us praise the holy women, men, and children,
those known to us and those known only to God,
and let us cry out to them:
Rejoice, All Saints of North America, and pray to God for us.

JACOB’S WELL

Saints of North America – known and unknown. While all of the canonized Saints of North America have so far been men, over the past few years an Orthodox woman, native of North America, has slowly become known to more and more people, particularly other Orthodox women.

Matushka Olga Michael, wife of the departed Archpriest Nikolai O. Michael from the village of Kwethluk on the Kuskokwim River in Alaska, as described in Fr. Michael Oleksa’s book, Orthodox Alaska, was neither a “physically impressive or imposing figure.” She raised eight children to maturity, giving birth to several of them without a midwife. While her husband was away taking care of many other parishes, she kept busy raising her family and doing many Continue reading SAINT OLGA MICHAEL OF ALASKA (NOV 8, +1979, ALASKA, USA): A HELPER IN RESTORING THE WORK OF GOD’S HANDS – BY FR. ANCIENT FAITH

Dr. Christine Mangala was raised in India and brought up a devout Hindu. Her family was close to one of India’s leading Hindu gurus and teachers. Now an Orthodox Christian writer and teacher, she and Illumined Heart host Kevin Allen speak about whether various aspects of Hindu Yoga are compatible with Christian faith and practice, or whether Yoga should be shunned entirely.

Mr. Allen: Welcome to The Illumined Heart on Ancient Faith Radio. As many of you know, we have spoken often on this program about the influence of eastern, non-Christian, spiritual ideas, metaphysics, and worldviews on our culture. And this is the spiritual background I came out of, one which continues to be a subject of interest to me, and, I hope, for some of you as well.

Recently, my parish in southern California has begun to see a trickle of enquirers coming from various eastern traditions, especially those of Hinduism. So I hope our conversation today—Yoga and Orthodox Christianity: Are They Compatible?—will bring light to the Continue reading YOGA AND ORTHODOX CHRISTIANITY: ARE THEY COMPATIBLE? – DR.
